Earlier this year, we booked a short city break - my only holiday of the year. Budapest was definitely a good choice. As was staying in a 4 star hotel. Beats a hostel of my earlier travels!
I fell in love with the place very quickly and I'm left wishing we had booked a longer stay.
We arrived on a Wednesday afternoon. After a slightly worrying minibus journey from the airport, we were dropped at our hotel. We freshened up and hit the streets as we had tickets for the opera. We had a speedy dinner before the performance, just around the corner.
We had heard that the Opera House was worth a visit, so why not take in some culture at the same time? We saw Das Rheingeld by Wagner. It wasn't my first opera, as my sister is classically trained; even for me, despite my German abilities, enunciation was not great. Luckily this had English subtitles, as well as Hungarian. The production itself was nothing I've ever seen before. It was basically a post-modernist production of a story based around Odin (Donner was not translated into Thor, but I did eventually put two and two together to work this out) as well as a dwarf, some mermaids and some giants.
It was a lovely experience sitting in a box and the Opera House is indeed stunning - opulent and intricate, gilded pillars and ceiling murals. A guided tour would probably suffice for most visitors, but if you're looking for something different, see an opera!
